Regional LACA Meeting held at LBI

Thursday 16th March saw Margaret Shaw, Catering Contracts Manager for the London Borough of Islington host the regional LACA conference. We recognise secondary school students have developed a variety of eating trends. Their taste buds are more advanced and established. To encourage students to eat a healthy meal we have taken their popular eating habits and reinvented them into multi choice menu. Utilising Caterlink tried and tested in-house brands a re-launching was planned. Ideal opportunities rose in the form of two large hospitality events at St Aloysius. The feedback was excellent
 
 

School Chef of the Year 2017 Regional Event

Fatma from St Peters & St Pauls receiving recognition for the excellent dishes produced in this year’s SCOTY regional event. Our Congratulations are extended to our contract partners Caterlink in the London Borough of Camden who deservedly won the regional event and progress to the national finals. The competition was very competitive and a high standard was produced by all teams.

Six Islington children enjoy Arsenal experience with Caterlink’s healthy eating competition

Six children across North London have been named as the winners of a healthy eating competition run by Caterlink, the school education catering specialist. The lucky youngsters were invited to an awards presentation at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium before watching Sunday’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace. Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere presented the school pupils with trophies pitchside before the group settled down to enjoy the match action. In partnership with Islington Council and Arsenal in the Community, entrants were asked to design a healthy meal and drink as part of last year’s National School Meals Week. The children, who are from a mixture of primary schools including Yerbury, Ashmount, Hungerford and Ambler, will now have their winning ideas prepared and served during ‘special days’ throughout March and April. Neil Fuller, Managing Director of Caterlink, commented: Islington Council and Arsenal in the Community have been great in helping us with orchestrating the competition and arranging such a fantastic prize. We want to get children excited about food and healthy eating so this is a great example of engaging youngsters in making healthy choices, which in turn will enable our highly-trained chefs to create delicious menus that children enjoy. Islington was one of the first councils to fund universal free school meals for nursery and primary school children. Councilor Joe Caluori, Islington Council’s executive member for children and families said: “It’s great to see kids taking a keen interest in healthy eating. In our borough all children up to the age of 11 can have a decent, nutritious meal at lunch time, which helps their wellbeing.” Alan Sefton, Head of Arsenal in the Community said, This was a great initiative to engage local youngsters and get them thinking about the importance of a healthy diet. We were delighted to welcome the winning pupils to the Emirates to present their awards and I’m sure meeting Jack will have made the experience even more special! The winning dishes include a creamy salmon and broccoli pie topped with mashed potato and served with a side salad, a seafood or vegetable paella and Spanish omelette with peppers, broccoli and tomatoes served with a side salad with feta cheese. Drinks include fresh orange juice, water and milk and strawberries.

Caterlink is delighted to announce that we been awarded the Soil Associations Food For Life Catering Mark at Gold Status for the school meals provided in the London Boroughs of Camden and Islington. Neil Fuller, Caterlinks Managing Director commented We are delighted that our commitment to serving fresh, local and organic food has been recognised by the Gold Food for Life Catering Mark. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to supporting sustainable and organic systems, as a way of significantly reducing our environmental footprint. We hope our customers will enjoy their meals all the more knowing that we use a range of ingredients produced in the UK, as well as some organic produce. Rob Sexton, Chief Executive of Soil Association Certification, says: The Gold Catering Mark is a fantastic achievement on this scale so it is brilliant to see Caterlink gaining recognition for serving great fresh meals made with seasonal, local and organic ingredients. Serving menus to Gold Catering Mark standards can significantly reduce carbon emissions and supports local businesses so this is a win-win for planet-friendly food and the local economy. One of our local schools had a special visitor to officially open their school garden today, after receiving a cheque, to set up its own kitchen garden. The project will help educate pupils about the origins of fresh food and the benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables. The donation from Caterlink’s charitable Foundation will go towards the construction of raised garden beds at the school. The School will be able to grow an array of fruit and vegetables and involve many more children, their parents and members of the local community in food related projects and learning. The kitchen garden will enhance the focus on fresh food already in place at the school through the work of Caterlink. Neil Fuller, Managing Director of Caterlink, said: “We are delighted to support the school through our Foundation’s Kitchen Garden project. By working closely with schools, we hope to have a positive impact in reinforcing the importance of fresh food and provenance to local children. This donation from WSH Foundation will go a long way to ensuring we can achieve this.”

Sam Choo our on site chef manager has used old pots, pans, bins, mayonnaise tubs and branches from a cut down tree to grow a herb and vegetable garden outside the kitchen. It has been blessed by the local priest and visited by the pupils at Our Ladys. All the plants have been grown from cuttings or seed with no pesticides used. Sam uses the herbs to garnish and flavour his food and is extremely proud of his achievements. The school said "Sam is an asset to the school, we are extremely proud that he is our chef, the children love him"
